Janice is a retired BC educator with decades of experience in early learning, numeracy, mathematics education, and responsive pedagogies. Her work bridges classrooms, communities, and research, with a deep focus on how children learn through materials, place, and lived experiences.

A career built on a love of learning
Janice began her education career teaching music, dance and preschool. She then spent 34 years teaching in the Richmond School District, working across primary classrooms, kindergarten, learning resource, and teacher-librarianship. She also held multiple district-level roles supporting K–12 educators’ professional learning in assessment, curriculum, numeracy, mathematics, and science.
Janice has been a seconded instructor and Adjunt Professor at UBC for many years and is currently a sessional instructor teaching mathematics education courses for teacher candidates.

Academic background
Janice holds undergraduate degrees and diplomas from UBC in English Literature, Primary Education, and K-12 Mathematics and Science Education
She earned a Master of Arts degree in Mathematics Education at UBC, examining problem-solving practices in primary students. She is currently a PhD candidate at UBC, researching young children’s mathematics learning and problem-posing in relation to environments, materials, contexts, and concepts.
Beyond the math...
Outside her professional life, Janice is a daughter, sister, wife, and mother of two adult sons. She enjoys being outdoors, baking and cooking, travelling, making and creating, and learning new things.
